The "homie dynamic" in Shang-Chi.

These guys are so fking funny.
Scrolling around my YouTube feed I come across those videos that are titled like "steve rogers being an old man for five minutes." and I find one of Shang-Chi
I watched the movie with my parents and I recall liking it for his friend. But sht I don't remember much of the plot right now because it's. So thanks to this video I'm practically watching it for 18 minutes:
Katy is so random, loud and so damn funny I'm living for it. And I want to be her friend.
No. I want her to be my homie.
Homies are a little different. Homies grew up with you and I feel like they get you more than "friends. And I have homies. I miss them very much :) because I get to joke with them on a different degree than I do with my other friends.
Though Caleb isn't my "homie" we are 100% partying like Katy and Shang in the karaoke room and getting too fked up we end up EXACTLY like this:

Katy shit talking Shang
She's dissing her boy.
On the bus she says to the bad guy: DO YOU THINK HE CAN FIGHT? COME ON BRO
And after witnessing more of his badass fighting she still bet against him in an arena. Tbh I would too; I didn't see any "superpowers" other than Bruce Lee choreography on the bus. Meanwhile in this ring I see daddy mer-Hulk in the cage.
The plane scene
I hate airlines. After this week I'm never booking with Spirit again. What I thought turned out to be my $125 flight turned out in the end after random fees and adding my baggage it came to $350. And the website sucks.
Their airline's waitress is fking dumb. Sorry. Anyways-- Katy shtalked her too in the best way!
A recap on the scene: Shang is talking about his history to Katy when the edgy flashback suddenly gets cut off by the fight attendant asking if they want BeEf Or VeGiTaRiAn
Uh vegetarian
Okay. Oh. Sorry we're out :( We only have beef
Okay ... I'll have beef.
Okay! And what would you like?
Beef :) Cuz thats all you have, right?
Okay! So you have the beef--
Yes
And you have--
The beef.
Dumb ass bi--
Then she disses Shang about his name change logic. Fr though. Shang and Shaun. Michel and Mishel. Honestly I'm guilty of that too with Jenn and Jess. But people always mistakenly call me Jess so it works.
I love this comical butting heads trying to learn, trying to teach. Gena Gina. Ew.
But this interaction was so awkward so ill timing and so... stupid.

Meeting the Sister
That'd be me too honestly. "Nice to meet you. You so badass. I like everything you do-- yeah."
I like your pants.

Yay.
But really, I love her outfit in this movie. Fanny packs for the win. Green. Kinda grunge kinda preppy. And look hella comfortable.
I'd like green pants.
Singing
Just like she shared in her random story at dinner she started singing towards this guy before he swings a stick at her, making him stop. Weird, goofy, again, living for it. And it works. Mental confusion op. Effective defense mechanism.
Life
Damn. When their friend started laying the facts about Katy and Shang's skills and that they just work valet hit hard.
They started laughing, reacting in disbelief like its a joke, and trying to counter it by saying "we actually like our job!" "It's not easy!" "We're not running from adulthood!"
Sure, thats important. Very important. But I feel like we can all relate to making excuses on where we at when things can be better. When things can take the route we wanted it to initially take.
I feel very similar to my route; I graduated with a BFA in digital art wanting to work in animation and games and I basically work IT at a school district. Just to pay the bills. But I fear that I will be stuck in here for a long time, so I make little excuses and positive bullet points to defend myself that I will deal with it.
My family was like that with my brother still working retail when he had a degree. But the oppurtunity eventually came and he's kicking ass! I just hope I get there, and writing these blogs and blabbering about these messages from movies will be a part of it.
I applaud Marvel for making their characters relatable.
And I love how Katy added "sorry I'm ENJOYING my life"
Job gives you money, money gives you fun. Kareoke bars ain't free.
We'll deal with what we got so we can get what we want.
Katy's Energy
Katy is the perfect benchmark on the type of energy I want to write my characters in Obsidian.
Real. Fun. Not-dramatic yet dramatic. Anxious. Confused. Young.
A normal friend introduced to a new world with magic and new characters.
"Um, pretty confused right now because, uh, initially, I thought your dad should definitely see a therapist for his illusions bu-but that dragon vomited a magical water map and now I have no idea whats real."

Same girl.
That one quote really stuck to me, and the setting; how she's sitting against the floor spaced out yet a lot of anxious head movement expressing this statement.
And her absolute TERRIFIED expression when she sees a headless chicken pig with wings.

Katy tries her best to ride through this whole wacky journey. Trying to help. Trying to understand. Trying to... survive, and help save the fking world.
Again, true homie.
And the energy she had when she was practicing archery is literally me.
AYO GUANG BO YOU SAW THAT ?! THAT WAS TIGHT!

Close shot too *golf claps* kill it girl.
Then they use the movie as their next date story that sounds total B.S until the Avengers took them.
And finishing the movie singing with Wong <3

*GASP* ...Would that mean if they had a party Madisyn would be invited?!

Man I wish I was her kicking it with Wong :( !
Conclusion
I'm so happy Marvel added these very... homie human dynamics in their films.
Let's just call it that for now.
It's something I look for a lot in movies; strong relationships that feel real and that I feel like I want to be a part of it. Like Grown Ups. Or any wholesome Adam Sandler movie. Anyways, their dynamic didn't feel "acted". Instead it felt like I was really with them.
I was vibing.
And that person can be either the actor or the character. Hopefully the character, but this Katy girl is definitely a comedian and I have a strong feeling she implemented a lot of herself in the character so she can make a great performance.
Strong performance is the one thing that saves Marvel films that we feel like its slacking.
Like in The Marvels, I feel like Kamala's and Nick Fury's performance really sweetened the deal for me to enjoy the movie. If it were too serious, un-relatable, I'd be so bored.
So far these are pretty much "comedic" performances. So lets name a couple of "oscarey" ones. Some badass ones.
Gandalf
LeeLoo Dallas
Professor Xavier
Godfather
Wonder Woman
Black Panther (RIP Chadwick)
QUEEN RAMONDA
Katy and Shang are one chaotic duo. Buddy-cop vibes. And a cute ship.
Very entertaining and I'm in for the ride.
I want to create that vibe with David and Krys. With Jess and Josh. Sunny and Benji. Vincent and Kevin The strong pairs of characters in my story, friendship or relationship.
These characters have seen some sht. Felt some sht. Done some sht. And its completely human to feel scared and anxious about it wanting something to change and get better. I'm sure most of us have some baggage, and however. we express that is not read by some script.
Fight or flight.
So I applaud the writers of Shang-Chi and for Awkwafina's perfomance (omg thats really her name?!)
So I'm gonna continue to keep a keen eye on this. On character vibes. Character with character vibes. And I look forward to dissect the next one :) !
